Schloss Benrath

Schloss Benrath is located in the South of Düsseldorf. It was built between 1755 and 1773 by Nicolas de Pigage (1723-1796) on behalf of elector Karl Theodor von der Pfalz. The landmarked ensemble of the Summer Residence, hunting park, ponds and canal system is known as the most significant architectural gesamtkunstwerk of Düsseldorf and was proposed by the city to be included in the UNESCO-list of the World cultural heritage. Schloss Benrath contains the following museums:

Museum for European Garden Art
As part of the EUROGA 2002 plus exhibition, the Museum for European Garden Art was founded in the east wing of Benrath Palace on 19th April 2002.

Corps de Logis
The Corps de Logis is the central building of the three-wing maison de plaisance which was erected for the Palatine Elector Carl Theodor by his garden and building director Nicolas de Pigage.

Museum for Natural History
The Natural History Museum in the west wing was opened in 1929. It was originally called the "Natural History and Local History Museum".

The Park
The palace park measures 612,000 square metres. On the occasion of the EUROGA 2002 plus, several sections of the park were carefully restored with great attention to detail. Consequently, visitors can not only go for a stroll in the summer and hunting garden (Lust- und Jagdgarten) just as people did in the 18th Century, but in the former kitchen garden (the "Potager"), they can also find out how the palace kitchen was supplied with herbs and fresh vegetables.

Kaiserswerth
Kaiserswerth was actually once an island-werth, which translates as river-island. As early as the 11th century, a Kaiserpfalz, or monarch's residence, was found here. Today only ruins remind you of the first and successive buildings, one of which was ordered by Barbarossa in the 12th century. The castle was blown up in 1702. Kaiserswerth, however, now prides itself on its charming atmosphere, created by gaslights, cobbled streets and beautifully restored houses. And indeed Kaiserswerth, Düsseldorf's eldest and most traditional quarter, has a lot to offer. Until today you can see the well fortified past on the ground plan. Here one of the eldest Rhein was located. Around the Kaiserswerther market, you can shop and dine. From Gourmet restaurants to take-away, everything is to be had.

There are 19 museums in Dusseldorf: medieval museums, natural history museums, theater history museums, ceramic museums, contemporary museums, Roman glass museums and more.

Some of the significant museums and art galleries of the city are:

  • K21, a museum for international contemporary art. • Museum Kunst Palast, located in the Ehrenhof complex, just a ten minutes walk from the Kö. Besides the presentation of ancient art and classic modernism, the museum kunst palace is particularly dedicated to contemporary art from all five continents. Regional focuses are associated with international highlights on an area of almost 9,000 sqm.
  • Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, within five minutes walking distance from the hotel, first opened in 1967 and re-opened after extensive conversion in 2002, is a centre for temporary exhibitions. The focus of its national and international progamme is on present-day art.
  • Hetjens Museum, within seven minutes walking distance from the hotel, conveys the universal history of ceramics from all continents and troughout the ages from its beginnings to the present. Its collection focuses on such areas as East Asia, Africa, the Near East and the Ancient Americas; earthenware, stoneware, faience, and porcelain from Europe. Special shows are presented regularly.
  • Goethe Museum, within eight minutes walking distance from the hotel, in the late-Baroque Jägerhof palace, approx. 1,000 exhibits from a collection of 50,000 original testimonials are displayed in a permanent exhibition on the writer's life and work.
